PP changes expected

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 3, 2009 05:38 PM

With the power play looking for any kind of spark (29th in the league), expect some personnel changes tonight.

PP1 could see Derek Morris and Dennis Wideman at the points, David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron interchanging on the left side (half-wall and goal line), and Mark Recchi as the net-front presence.

PP2 will most likely feature Zdeno Chara and either Matt Hunwick or Andrew Ference at the points, with Vladimir Sobotka, Brad Marchand, and Blake Wheeler down low.

Early PP work

Both power-play units are on the ice for some pre-practice work. A foam blocker is set up in front of each net to help the Bruins shoot high.

PP1: Zdeno Chara, Dennis Wideman, Marc Savard, Michael Ryder, Mark Recchi.

PP2: Steve Montador/Andrew Ference, Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Phil Kessel, Chuck Kobasew.

The Bruins are enjoying a day off today. They will resume practice tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Ristuccia Arena. Their next game is on Tuesday at home against Philadelphia.

With no media availability today, let's roll out Likes & Dislikes for its latest shift:

Likes

1. The resurgent power play. After being blanked in nine of 11 games, the Bruins have scored at least one PPG in their last four outings. Late in the third, they were snapping the puck around, especially with Patrice Bergeron at the point and Zdeno Chara serving as a backdoor option.

2. Bergeron. Another solid all-around effort from the still-improving center. If Bergeron, Marc Savard, and David Krejci play to their capabilities, they will present matchup problems in the playoffs.

3. Claude Julien firing back at Brooks Laich. Nothing like some heat to jack up a rivalry.

Dislikes

1. The recent scuttling of the goaltending rotation. Manny Fernandez has to see more action to give Tim Thomas some rest, physically and mentally.

2. The dip in play from the No. 2 pairing of Andrew Ference and Dennis Wideman. They haven't been as crisp and thorough with the puck lately.

3. That Alex Ovechkin can run around without fear of retribution. Ovechkin's physical play helps to make him the most electric player in the league. Curious, though, that nobody goes back at Ovechkin after he throws his teeth-rattling hits.

The Bruins are going through power-play drills, with Patrice Bergeron back on the point.

First unit: Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Marc Savard, P.J. Axelsson, Chuck Kobasew.

Second unit: Dennis Wideman, Andrew Ference, David Krejci, Milan Lucic, Blake Wheeler.

Shift for Bergeron

The Bruins are going through power-play drills to start practice. Patrice Bergeron, usually one of the point men on the No. 1 unit, is now down low with the second unit. Andrew Ference and Dennis Wideman are at the points, with Bergeron skating down low with Milan Lucic and David Krejci.

This is the first time this season Bergeron has not been at the point on the power play. Today, Bergeron has been working the left-side wall with Krejci, while Lucic is serving as net-front man.

On the first unit, Aaron Ward and Zdeno Chara are at the points. Marc Savard, Phil Kessel, and Stephane Yelle are down low. Yelle is the goal-line/net-front lefty. Yelle has not played on the PP this year.

PP observations

Zdeno Chara (right) and Patrice Bergeron (left) start on the points. But as the play progresses, they fan out into the umbrella formation -- Chara at the point in the middle, Bergeron at the left circle, Marc Savard along the right-side half-boards.

In front, Michael Ryder is the high-slot sniper open for wristers and one-timers. P.J. Axelsson is the net-front man setting screens and looking for tips and rebounds.
